The GNY Stars 18u AA team captured the LIAHL title on Sunday, March 6th with a hard fought victory over the LI Rebels by a score of 2-1. It was a tightly played first period with both teams failing to register a goal and the Stars slightly outshooting the Rebels 11 to 9.
The second period started with the Stars on a power play but they failed to capitalize. However, the next penalty the Rebels took would be costly as the Stars were able to set up in the Rebels zone and a after some hard work along the boards. After the puck found its way to the point, Tommy Laible passed across to his defensive partner Vincent Cennamo who was able to find Dennis Kirschbaum in the right circle. He skated in a few steps toward the net and fired it past the Rebels goalie on the far post for a 1-0 Stars lead with 13 minutes left in the period.
It stayed that way thanks in part to stellar goaltending from Chris Demas who turned away every shot he faced through the first 2 periods. The Stars added some insurance a few minutes into the 3rd on a scramble in front and once again it was Kirschbaum cashing in a rebound on a George Clark shot. The Stars were seemingly in control until a point shot by a Rebels defenseman eluded Demas to cut the lead in half with just under 5 minutes to play in the contest. Despite the narrow lead, the Stars stayed poised, kept the puck deep in their opponent's zone with a solid forecheck and did not allow the Rebels to pull their goalie for an extra attacker until there were 10 seconds left.
Congratulations to Coaches Peter Lompado and Tim Halewicz and the 18u AA team. Good luck to the team as they move on to the state championships on March 9th.
